This year I have incorporated Innovation Time into my language arts class. This class is based on the Google model which provides 20% time to each person so he/she can explore their passion/personal interests. I was inspired to devote 20% of the week to this type of learning after reading “Pure Genius” by Don Wettrick.
Innovation Time is fluid, and is controlled by the students and their research. Throughout the process students are asked to complete a project proposal, create a timeline, connect with a mentor, and share their projects with others.
One of the most important lessons that we’ve learned after after the first trimester is that failure is a part of the process. There were many roadblocks, but each was handled by the students, and each provided a valuable learning opportunity.
I will post updates on projects that my students are exploring.
